In 2013 Hunton’s manufactured and installed a tidal barrier to allow fluvial discharge at low tide and close for tidal defence on high tide. The gates were manufactured in S355 carbon steel and finished in a glass flake epoxy system with cathodic protection system for this aggressive tidal environment. Each gate is around 7m tall with a Oak heel and mitre post and is operated by hydraulic rams.
Control consists of a PLC based automation system with HMI touch screen graphical interface to allow simple day to day control and detailed analysis of the level and operational data when required.
The gates were commissioned in late 2013 weeks before a tidal surge event which rose to within 500mm of the top of the gates. This represented the 1:200 year event level providing the most tangible evidence of the need for this critical defence gate.
