Huntons have recently completed the installation of the MEICA elements of the A120 Little Hadham Bypass upgrade works. Huntons were brought on board to deliver the design, manufacture, installation and site commissioning of two trash screens, two hydraulic penstocks, a manually operated penstock, two outlet screens, five GRP kiosks and the associated control and operating equipment as well as the ancillary steelwork such as parapet handrailing and stoplogs.
The equipment was installed either side of the newly constructed A120 bypass on the Ash and Albury rivers to prevent flooding downstream at The Ash and The Ford. This was achieved by backing up the water north of the A120 creating a flood storage area. For this reason it is critical the MEICA equipment is operable and reliable in a flood storage area as it will be submerged when called to operate. The design of the MEICA elements on the penstocks needed an IP68 rating which required a custom design to achieve.
Due to the nature of the site the design provided challenges in how far away the operating equipment needed to be sited to ensure it was outside of the flood level, however Huntons were able to develop a custom design to overcome these challenges.
